Signs of the Times, Issue No. 121 - 09/07/10

Cody, put the shovel down and slowly back away from the hole...

Greetings to one and all. As today is Tuesday, here is my Newsletter. Topics to be discussed: The Boise State Boo Box, my gridiron glee, the "Snugarena," the final countdown, and two movie reviews. On we go.

Everybody's talking about Boise State in the sports media today. Everybody loves Boise State. Here's the deal - I hate Boise State. Why do I hate them? Let me tell you. Yes, I watched their game last night. Yes, it was a good game. Yes, they looked impressive. BUT - it was one big win. Just one. And it's their only big game of the season. They play Oregon State in two weeks and hopefully they'll give the Broncos a run for their money, but it's looking like Boise State will mostly likely go undefeated this season. Strength of schedule is the thing that bothers me. They play weak teams for the rest of the year and, like I said, the toughest test for Boise State is already under their belt. It's smooth sailing from here. Many broadcasters are saying that Boise State deserves a spot in the national championship game in January. Hang on a second everyone - that's not until January. I don't care how hard they've worked in the past to get where they are today. If championships were based on lifetime achievement and past performances, Stockton and Malone and Jerry Sloan deserve five rings. Being a decent team for the last three years shouldn't mean anything this year. They had one good game against a good team, but it wasn't a dominant performance, by any means. One tough win out of 12 or 13 games this season. Would you give an MVP trophy to somebody who played well for five minutes of the first quarter and sat on the bench for the rest of the game? I don't think so. Down with Boise State. Down, down, down. Oh, and by the  way, welcome to The Boo BoxBOOOOOO!!

No Smurf Turf.

The NFL season starts up this week, which means it's time for Fantasy Football once again. I'm still confident that my team will yet again emerge victorious just like I did last year, but I think I'll have a lot more competition this season, which will be fun. I have recently decided that football is the greatest sport. I love, love, love the Jazz and I like to shoot around every once in a while, but football is different from basketball in that I can sit down and watch pretty much any game and enjoy it. With the NBA, I watch the Jazz and that's it. Football is great. I love the NFL. I could sit and watch any game!... except for maybe Houston vs. Tampa Bay. Not sure about that one. I've even started paying more attention to out-of-state college football in the past few months. College football is harder because there are way too many teams and way too much turnover each season, but I still love the sport. Long live football, the world's greatest sport.

**QUESTION TIME!!**

Q. "Dear Aaron,
Clearly you love football. Whose bandwagon are you on for this NFL season?"
Just Curious,
- The Junior Mounties

A. You guys know I'm a Saints fan. Come on. It's all about the Saints. You also know I hate bandwagon jumpers. BUT - let me explain something to you. You become a bandwagon fan when you shift loyalties to a certain team because everybody's doing it or because that team just won a championship, thus making it "cool" to cheer for them. If you do it beforehand, however, I have nothing wrong with that. I'll tell you who the team to watch this year is going to be - it's the Baltimore Ravens. Those guys are going to be a fun team this year. They've got an emerging young quarterback and a couple veteran wide receivers joining the squad for the '10-'11 season (Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmandzadeh). They'll be good. I'm telling you! (SALUTE!)

Mark my words.
Q. "Dear Aaron,
I know that you have commented on the Snuggies before (those bizarre fleece blanket/coats), and so I'm curious about your take on the new commercial with people actually wearing the Snuggies and dancing to the Macarena. (Personally, I find it highly disturbing and the best reason yet for me never to buy a Snuggie.)
- An Admirer

A. Thanks for the Question. I had never heard of said commercial, so I had to look it up on YouTube. Just look for "Snuggie macarena" and it will come right up. I laughed out loud when I saw it. How can you not like this? It's the Macarena, sleep overs, juggling, Foosball, hula hoops, Jenga, courtroom drama, watching a movie, eating popcorn, a grandma knitting in a zebra Snuggie... pretty much everything you ever wanted to do in your life - in a SNUGGIE! Horrendously cheesy, but horrendously awesome, as well. Snuggies are to the new millennium what overalls were to young boys in the early '90s. The Snuggie bandwagon is calling you... and this is what it has to say - "It's the blanket with sleeves!"

Join in and DANCE!!

Q. "How do you decide who gets a Shoutout?"
- Kathryn Christensen

A. Um... I usually just make it up when I get to the end of the Newsletter. Sometimes it even comes as a surprise to me!

I have a clock in my head. The clock is counting down the time until I graduate from college. And right about now, that clock says "13 1/2 weeks." As my final semester of school has started up, I have realized that the craziest, most liberal teachers were saved for last. I've got some really weird professors this semester. Yes, weirder than Nick, my homosexual former teacher of my Comm and Gender class. Yes, crazier than Professor DeLuca, who was obsessed with Avatar and drinking from glass bottles. However, right now I also have one of my favorite classes of my tenure at the U. Bowling. It's great. All we do is show up every other day and bowl. Last week, I bowled a 136 - including a three-strike turkey - which wasn't bad, considering how long I had gone without bowling. Today, however, I bowled like a 65 through 8 frames when class ended. Horrible. I blame it on the league-play style, which I was new to. We alternated between two lanes every frame and I'm pretty sure the right lane was crooked. I was fine on the left lane, though.

Cue my theme song.

Here's your Week in Review. I saw two movies this week. The first was "The Blind Side," which my family rented. I procrastinated watching it about as long as possible because I din't think it was going to be as good as everyone had said it was. I sat down with the family and suffered through it and this is my evaluation. Fantastic. It was funny, it was inspirational, it almost jerked a few tears. This is easily the best sports movie since "Remember the Titans." Perhaps it was more story-oriented and less about actual football than "RTT," but I really enjoyed it. "The Blind Side" gets a 9.5 out of 10.

Good ones... Good ones.

The second movie I saw was "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," another one that I wouldn't go out of my way to see, unless it was with my family, which it was. So my parents, Cody, and I took off to the dollar theater and I prepared myself to be amazed with the mediocrity of it all. Roughly based on an old school Mickey Mouse cartoon, the movie centers around a reluctant twenty-something who is thrust into a new life as a... well... a sorcerer's apprentice. Though there were a few cheesy parts in the movie, my inner Final Fantasy nerd really liked this movie, too. I thought there was a good mixture of comedy, action, magic, romance, and scenes shot in a public restroom. It was a great, family-friendly, profanity-free movie, and I'd recommend it. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" gets 8 out of 10.

If you have something you'd like me to Review, let me know.

The Shoutout of the Week goes to Kathryn Christensen, my brother Adam's wife. Consider this a belated birthday gift, sister. You're fantastic and here's to you being the first one to make me an uncle. It better be a boy.

Oh, Tuesday... There were so many things to talk about today... So many things I didn't even get to. Hmm... better save it for my radio show that you should all listen to. If you'll excuse me, I better go before Cody starts digging another hole.

Until next Time,

Move It! Sell It! And Leave the Door Open!

Aaron
